The paper...

Washi

Paper, a living and natural material

For the past thirty years, Céline Wright has been crafting lighting fixtures from Japanese paper. She works with washi in a unique and innovative way, using a technique that has evolved over the years.

The central material in Céline Wright’s work is washi paper, a traditional Japanese paper made from plant fibers such as kozo, the paper mulberry.

Valued for centuries in Japan for its strength and lightness, washi possesses many qualities that are largely unknown in Europe. This Japanese paper, with its diaphanous and enduring whiteness, diffuses light with softness and warmth. Its subtle transparency allows for the creation of lighting fixtures that transform spaces and envelop them in a soothing atmosphere.

Céline Wright particularly appreciates the paper’s apparent fragility, which gives no hint of its strength, perfectly illustrating the fable of the oak and the reed.

Tours of Paper Workshops and Factories in Japan

During her stays in Japan - particularly during her artist residency at Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto - Céline Wright made numerous visits to traditional paper factories and workshops and was able to deepen her knowledge.

That is how she discovered kozo paper, which is made from fibers of exceptional purity. This high-quality washi allows her to experiment with new techniques and adds a new dimension to her work.

Discovering Paper

Workshop in the outdoors

In the spirit of Land Art, the idea behind this project is to create impressions directly on the rock in order to give the paper a textured effect.
A first of its kind, this completely natural technique eliminates the need to make molds and forms out of polyurethane (which is highly polluting and unpleasant to work with) or heavy, bulky plaster. This is made possible by using high-quality, very pure Kozo paper - which is both very supple and durable and can be worked like skin - combined with rice glue.
The alternation of rough imprints and hand-sculpted plaster applications in certain areas allows for more refined shapes, creating relief and movement. The result ranges from the grainy appearance of stone to forms crafted with finesse and delicacy.
